Want to know what it really feels like to receive a Reiki attunement? I share all the juicy goodness and more.
What is Reiki?
The word Reiki is made up of two words: Re – which means Universal and Ki – meaning life force. Without sounding too woo woo, essentially it is the energy of nature. Described as osmotic, this simple, intelligent energy is drawn down through the healer and is put to use by the innate intelligence of their system to the area of most need or experience of dissonance in the recipient. Reiki enhances health, wellbeing, mood, interactions, intuitive guidance and how we operate generally in life.
Reiki was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in Japan around the year 1900, through the method of utilising cosmic life force through the use of symbols, which is the foundation or Reiki healing. This system of healing is based on ancient Taoist energy practices, which allow the practitioner to draw in energy and pass it on to a recipient without depleting their own energy. Today there are several different forms of Reiki, however Usui Reiki is considered to be the purest and original version, as created by Dr Usui himself.
What is an attunement?
A Reiki attunement is the process whereby the Reiki Master teacher tunes you, in a way, to be able to channel and act as a conduit for the universal lifeforce and pass it on to others who want to receive it.
This is done through the use of Reiki symbols, which are aspects and actions of cosmic life force collapsed into symbolic form. There are a total of four symbols in the Usui Reiki system, and all 4 are introduced to the student’s energy body in Level 1. Highly skilled and trained Reiki Master teachers integrate these symbols into the student through touch and “pushing” the symbols into their energy bodies.
Preparing for an attunement
We were advised to abstain from consuming animal products for the three days prior to, and during the two attunement days, which is something I’ve been doing for over 20 years! Students are also told not to drink any alcohol for three days prior to the attunement, and minimise or completely stop drinking caffeine.
How does it feel?
My Reiki attunements took place over two full days and it was one of the most profound experiences of my spiritual journey so far. In a group with three other students, each day started with a meditation so that we truly landed and were fully present. This was followed by lessons on how to heal with Usui Reiki, introduction of the symbols, and sharing of experiences by our Reiki Master over her many years of healing. On each day we received two attunements, each of which felt different and special in its own way.
The most noticeable was the first attunement. We started by entering a deep meditative state, after which our Reiki Master began touching our head and neck, followed by hands and feet. All four of us in the class saw bright purple lights under our closed eyes when we were touched, which was very affirming of the fact that we were bonded in this group. Our Reiki Master teacher pushed the Reiki symbol into our hands by tapping on them to activate them.
In this attunement, as soon as my teacher put her hands on my head, I felt an electric current flow from my head all the way down to my feet and into the ground. I then felt the presence of my power animal, eagle, who sat perched on my right shoulder. In the corner of the room I could hear my deceased grandfather playing his flute.
After this first attunement, I began to feel a tingling sensation in my hands. I am one who always has cold hands and feet, even in tropical weather, but after each attunement, it was noticeable how much warmer my hands were.
On the second day during the third attunement, I experienced a very sensual, tantric energy – it was highly provocative. Our Reiki Master told us that it’s normal to experience this as sexual energy, as is the universal life force – a tantric force of creation.
In my fourth and final attunement, I was visited by Neptune, a planetary archetypal deity I’ve been working with for a couple of years now. He came over, greeted me, and held my right hand in his. I saw this as a nod that I was on the right path in my spiritual quest.
One thing each attunement had in common was that we came out of them feeling, for lack of a better expression, high as a kite. Our pupils were dilated, our energies vibrant, and we felt complete serenity and peace with the universe.
In the middle of each day, we had an hour break to have a light meal and ground, which was super important when dealing with such high octane energy. Stepping out into the busy, bustling world felt strange, as we were vibrating at such a high frequency. It was easy to notice low vibratory states. So, the four of us grabbed wholesome, nourishing salads to go and sat in the Botanic Gardens under the trees to eat peacefully and feel the ground beneath us. I held a prophecy stone to help ground me even further.
Coming home from attunements to a vibrant and noisy household with two little ones under 5 was interesting! But one thing I noticed was how tuned in I was to my children. As they spoke, I felt I had tunnel vision listening to them. Their voices sounded more beautiful than ever and I had so much more bandwidth and felt so much joy for their antics.
What happens next?
After your attunements, you must conduct 21 days of self-Reiki healing, utilising everything learned during the attunements and lesson material. During this time, changes will take place that open your system, enabling you to channel Reiki. These changes take place metaphysically in the chakras, aura, and in the physical body. Some people may experience a toxic release or clearing process, which can take the form of emotional release such as anger, sadness, and crying. You may also experience a psychic flu, where your body experiences all the symptoms of a flu. I personally didn’t experience any toxic release, as I went through this two years prior during my first experience of Reiki healing.
Some advice given to help you during this process include avoiding watching TV or reading the news, work on releasing anger, fear, jealousy, hate, worry and other limiting feelings and beliefs, and reduce or eliminate sugar and chocolate. My personal advice would be to stop consuming animal products altogether, as this reduces toxins, karma, and keeps your energy system light and more receptive to channelling universal life force.
Joining the global community of Reiki practitioners was such a beautiful experience. I’m so proud to be part of a group of awakened souls striving to make the world a better place on a path of self-discovery, empowerment and light. I signed up to receive my Level 2 attunement on the same day!
